OK Jaanu: For a change, we can relate to the characters of Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. Their looks don’t seem to come out of another world. Both actors look like any other modern couple.Just a day after releasing its first look poster, the makers of OK Jaanu have released another one on Monday. Going by this new poster, one can see lead actors Aditya Roy Kapoor and sitting beside each other idly. There are no affectations as you usually get to see in a big Bollywood film poster.

And neither do we see actors indulging in striking a colourful pose. Instead, what we see is a relaxed image of Aditya and Shraddha with Mumbai Chowpatty forming the backdrop. AdvertisingAfter a series of commitment phobia-themed films like Love Aaj Kal, Shudh Desi Romance, Baar Baar Dekho and now Befikre, OK Jaanu’s latest still paints a contrasting picture. And it’s such a relief.
OK Jaanu is based on a live-in relationship of a couple in Mumbai. It is also one of the few films that explore the dynamics and complexities of a modern day relationship. She’s the storm to his calm & the chic to his geek! Get ready because!— Dharma Productions (@DharmaMovies)It is also sad that filmmakers here need to go down south to make a movie based on the same. Tamil romantic flicks including O Kadhal Kanmani (OK Jaanu), Alaipayuthey (Saathiya) and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (Ek Deewana Tha) are a few examples.

Alaipayuthey starring R Madhavan tells the story of a modern couple that has small struggles after they get married. Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa starring Trisha and Simbu is yet another take on unrequited love but with its fair share of practicalities. O Kadhal Kanmani is based on the struggle of a couple to be together in the face of demands from their individual professional lives. At no point in these films, you would see superficial characters engaged in telling a stale story. These characters are very much part of ourselves. It’s easy to relate to them.
Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa starring Trisha and Simbu is yet another take on unrequited love but with its fair share of practicalities.Even a small film like Masaan is set in present-day Varanasi and has a realistic approach towards a man-woman relationship. Deepak (played by Vicky Kaushal) and Shaalu behave like two adults. They take decisions and deal with difficulties of life with maturity. This year’s Sairat entwined in cast politics also tells a real story from the heartland of Maharashtra. Alaipayuthey starring R Madhavan tells the story of a modern couple that has small struggles after they get married. On the other hand, the story of two commitment phobic adults forms a recurrent theme in big Hindi movies. We can’t remember any recent Hindi movie that went beyond certain perceptions and assumptions surrounding modern relationships.
Aditya Chopra might have repeatedly said that he wanted to break away free DDLJ formula. But we don’t see that romance and longing in Dharam-Shyra’s tale from Befikre. It’s yet another sloppy take on modern romance. Their looks don’t seem to come out of another world. Both actors look like any other modern couple. The story is set in Mumbai – an ideal symbol of life’s incessant demands filled with moments of ambition, love and life. What filmmakers often forget is that as an audience we don’t cardboard characters with beautiful locales.
We also want characters who look and feel more human. Above all, we are all hungry for an emotive story. This would be wrong to say that there is no place for romance in the lives of millennials. Instead, they are trying more hard to find a moment of love in their busy lives. OK Jaanu poster seems like a prelude to that same story that we are looking for. Also Read:OK Jaanu is being co-produced by and Mani Ratnam.
